One of the breakout stars of the season so far for Chelsea has been Trevoh Chalobah.
The youngster was expected to be on loan this season, but impressive performances for a weakened squad in the European Super Cup and against Crystal Palace meant he’s forced his way into Thomas Tuchel’s plans.
In quotes on the Chelsea official website , the defender explained just when he had found out that he was going to be sticking around at Cobham this year:
“I spoke to the manager between the Palace and Arsenal games and he told me he wanted me to stay, so I moved over to the first-team building that week. Before that I was changing over at the Academy, but now I’ve fully moved over.
It was a nice feeling when the manager told me,” Trevoh explained modestly. “He spoke to me after training and told me how well I’d done, that I’d taken my chance in pre- season and in the games. He said he thinks I can be a good asset to the team and learn from the other players and support them.”
The failure to sign Jules Kounde has opened up a real channel for him to get first team minutes, and it only takes one injury or suspension in the back three to bring Trevoh into play.
Whether it’s through the cups or through other players missing out, Chalobah will get his chance. And given what we’ve seen so far – we’d back him to take it.
