It’s coming up to the 10th anniversary of Cesar Azpilicueta signing for Chelsea, and we love any chance to celebrate him here at Chelsea News.
This interview in The Telegraph with Romelu Lukaku’s agent Federico Pastorello was really supposed to be about the striker, but we loved the quotes on Azpi, whose transfer Pastorello was part of all those years ago.
Speaking about Malang Sarr, who he brought to Stamford Bridge this year, the agent said he was reminded of the Basque:
“I see in Malang the same attitude, the same focus, the same talent as Azpi when he joined Chelsea. That’s setting the bar so high and, of course, Malang needs to improve on the tactical side because Azpi is a genius, he’s a professor. But, like I was with Azpi, I’m 100 per cent sure that he will end up being a player for Chelsea.”
That’s flattering for both players, really. If Sarr can go on to have half the career at Chelsea that Azpi has had, he will have done well. He’s had a similarly inauspicious start, and after a year on loan on Porto where he barely played, we didn’t expect things to get much better here.
Instead, he’s gradually working his way into Thomas Tuchel’s plans, much like Azpi did with several managers back in the day. We hadn’t thought of them in the same way before – but could it be that Sarr goes on to be a cult hero, coming from nowhere, just like Azpi?
