The London giants are ready to open negotiations over a move for Mauro Icardi from PSG, as Chelsea push to sign a striker in winter as the German manager searches for a reliable backup for Romelu Lukaku. The Blues have a real shortage of centre-forwards.
Romelu Lukaku’s addition was seen as solving a complicated jigsaw, and the Belgian striker started delivering right away. However, a recent goal drought has seen the centre-forward go without scoring for several matches running. Meanwhile, Timo Werner has proven to be unreliable, and Thomas Tuchel looks to be slowly losing trust in his compatriot. Germany international has continued his trend of profligacy since the last campaign, missing rather easy chances.
While the coach considers Romelu’s position unquestionable, a reliable backup to Lukaku is now being sought. Argentina international is the answer the Blues are seeking, and his report claims that Chelsea are prepared to open negotiations over a deal.
He tweeted that Chelsea could negotiate with PSG for Icardi, who might already be considered out of favour at Parc des Princes. The signing of Lionel Messi in the summer has rendered Mauro a backup option, limited to sporadic games, mostly off the bench.
Despite that, the 28-year-old striker has played in 11 matches across all tournaments, mostly as a substitute, scoring three goals in the process. Coach Mauricio Pochettino has seemingly preferred the attacking talents of Mbappe, Neymar, Messi and Di Maria in a front four.
