Italian goalkeeper turned down chance to sign for Chelsea
Chelsea had the chance to land goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer but decided to reject the opportunity, according to reports.
The 22-year-old star became a free agent a couple of months ago after running his AC Milan deal down. He drew interest from across the continent, but Mino Raiola’s client ended up in Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain
Chelsea had two shot-stoppers on their books in Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy, and still do, but were keen on bringing in a new keeper. Gianluigi was available, but it has been revealed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano that the Blues decided to turn down a move to show their ‘trust’ in the Senegalese star who is their goalkeeper for the ‘next years’.
He has been heroic for Chelsea since his transfer from Rennes. Playing a key part in their UEFA Champions League success, as well as being nominated for the 2021 Yashin Trophy award, while winning the award of UEFA Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year.
He came to the rescue for Chelsea versus Brentford, making several eye-catching saves to ensure the club picked up all three points in a 1-0 victory in the west London derby.
