Chelsea faced Leeds in what was a frightening battle. Three points needed, three points delivered. Come on you Blues! Leeds have looked a shadow of themselves all season. With just 3 wins in 16, I could not have imagined a spectacle like what I witnessed.

I had to hold on tight to the edge of my seat. If I learnt anything from this, it’s that absolutely nobody is safe in this title race. Despite our current form, with Jorginho back in the squad and our selection of forwards looking healthy, I expected an easy win.

Once again, our forwards were unable to bail us out of trouble but the defence managed to give us a helping hand. One defender in particular. On behalf of all Chelsea fans worldwide, please give Antonio Rudiger the contract that he deserves. Not only a soldier in defence but also our saving grace in attack.

Rudiger put in a Man of the Match performance as he was defensively sound whilst simultaneously being the biggest threat in attack. It will be overlooked that he managed to secure two penalties for Chelsea. I mean, how do you justify the two mistakes from Raphinha and Mateusz Klich? Raphinha with the sloppy slide tackle on Rudiger in the penalty area and Klich just clipping the German unnecessarily in injury time.

The fact is, Rudiger found himself in these dangerous spaces forcing these fouls and that’s what made the difference. A level of intelligence and desire was needed to get into these areas. Fans often question his runs into the final third and his extreme desire to assist in attack, but now all is clear.

Of course, Jorginho is able to convert those two all-important penalties to give us the lead twice. He rarely misses from the spot and kept cool, calm and collected with his signature hop, skip and jump kick.

There have been several occasions where the defensive players have had to bail Chelsea out of sticky situations. Matches such as Aston Villa, Brentford and Tottenham earlier in the season come to mind where the backline had to take matters into their own hands.

Whilst we continue to chop and change our front three to find what exactly fits best, stability in the defence has given Thomas Tuchel lifelines in jammy matches such as these.

I guess the only question to ask is, when can we give Rudiger his new contract? When will this man be given what he truly deserves? A menace in defence and a threat in attack. He has everything we need in a defender and more.

I know that fans are looking to secure Andreas Christensen as a priority but time and time again Rudiger has come in clutch. He is a leader and a true Chelsea boy at heart.

We saw Rudiger take on Junior Firpo after the final whistle. His passion sent fans on social media into a frenzy calling for a new contract to be drafted as soon as possible.

If Rudiger’s antics against Leeds isn’t a reason to give him a few more years, then I don’t know what is.
