Chelsea captain turns down contract offer in boost to UCL giants

 

Chelsea full-back Cesar Azpilicueta remains on the radar of Barcelona after rejecting the Blues first proposal to extend his contract.

That is according to Sport, who report the Spaniard is considered as the solution for Barcelona’s ongoing problems at right-back. The outlet explain that the Spaniard is one of the names that’s being strongly mentioned by Blaugrana’s management as they plan to reinforce the team for the next campaign.

His contract with the Blues expires at the end of this term, and he has already snubbed the first renewal offer. That leaves Cesar free to negotiate with European sides earlier in 2022, and Barcelona are one of the teams who want to launch their move.

His unwillingness to sign an extension has pushed him closer to a Stamford Bridge exit, and Azpilicueta is on the top of the agenda for the Catalan outfit. Boss Xavi is not convinced by either Sergi Roberto, Mingueza or Sergino Dest, and so Cesar is a name that interests him.

There are no signs that discussions have taken place yet, but that looks to be a formality at this point, with his decision to turn down the aforementioned renewal seemingly giving the La Liga club optimism of getting him.
