The German manager has been handed a massive injury boost after Mateo Kovacic returned to full training, though he will not play in Wednesday’s UCL game. Chelsea have been struggling with several absentees recently, with the likes of Chilwell, Kante, Lukaku, and Croatian international all sidelined.

Mateo has missed the Blues’ last eight matches with a hamstring injury suffered in the last minute of a training session in October, but he is finally on the verge of a comeback. Kovacic has recovered from the problem and returned to full training this week.

Although the Blues need to beat Zenit Saint Petersburg when they travel to Russia on Wednesday night in their final UCL game to guarantee top spot, the 27-year-old midfielder is not expected to be part of the travelling party.

Chelsea do not want to take any risks with the Croatian midfielder, and they are instead targeting a return in Saturday’s PL game with Leeds United at Chelsea. The Blues’ injury woes continued at the weekend with West Ham United, with Havertz and Alonso both having to come off with injuries.

In midfield, Jorginho has been playing with a hip injury while Saul was once again hauled off after only 45 minutes in the recent game with Watford. The Spanish midfielder could now be forced to play at left wing-back if Marcos Alonso has to join Ben Chilwell on the treatment table for a prolonged period of time.
