Former Chelsea winger Willian has heaped praise on Reece James and tipped the Blues full-back for a bright future. The 22-year-old has enhanced his already burgeoning reputation with a string of excellent displays for Thomas Tuchel’s side this season.
Deployed mainly as a wing-back, James has delivered an impressive four goals and five assists so far in the current Premier League campaign. Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, Willian hailed Chelsea academy graduates Callum-Hudson Odoi and Mason Mount, but picked out James as his favourite in Tuchel’s team.
When asked about the players currently at Chelsea he likes to watch, Willian said: ‘[Callum] Hudson-Odoi, Mason Mount, Reece James.’ When pressed to name a favourite, Willian replied: ‘Difficult. I think Reece James – I like him. ‘He’s a good player. I think he can be one of the best right-backs in the world in years.’
Chelsea’s title charge has stuttered of late, with the goalless draw against Wolves on Sunday seeing them go six points behind league leaders Manchester City.
Willian thinks City, second-placed Liverpool and the Blues are all in the race this season, but is backing his former club to get the job done.
‘Three teams can win the league this year; Chelsea, Liverpool and City,’ added the Brazilian. ‘But, Chelsea, for sure.’
