Former Chelsea starlet Charly Musonda broke down in tears after learning he will be leaving the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The Belgian was at one point in his career regarded as one of Chelsea’s brightest prospects, backed up earn a place in the first-team after scoring on his full debut for the Blues at the age of 20.

Musonda endured an injury-hit two years, however, playing just four times in that period as a result of a knee problem that at one point left his career in doubt. Now 25, Musonda has featured for the Chelsea Under-23s again this season but announced on Instagram in November that he is set to become a free agent this summer.

‘It’s been a difficult one,’ Musonda told The Beautiful Game Podcast. ‘Even the post on Instagram, I wasn’t going to be too emotional with it because I didn’t want to go long into the details and go long into the memories of everything.

‘I spoke with Petr Cech in August on the phone and after those talks, I knew straight away, okay, I’m going to leave in August here, there is nothing else I can do. ‘After the phone call, I was literally crying for a long time because I’d been there for a while. Even now, it’s going to take some time to get around it. It is still mentally difficult.’

musonda joined Celtic in January 2018 on an 18-month loan deal, starring in a Europa League victory over Zenit St Petersburg only for the loan to be terminated shortly after due to a lack of playing time.

In the summer of 2018 he joined Vitesse Arnhem on loan where he suffered the posterior cruciate ligament injury that has derailed his career.
