Thomas Tuchel should make Raheem Sterling the Chelsea captain following his arrival from Manchester City , says Trevor Sinclair. Chelsea’s current captain Cesar Azpilicueta is on the verge of joining Barcelona as his decade at Stamford Bridge reaches an end.
Sterling joined Chelsea for £45m this summer and the England international has heaps of experience – with more than 10 Premier League seasons under his belt across spells at City and Liverpool.
The 27-year-old forward won four Premier League titles during his time at the Etihad as well as the FA Cup and has lifted five League Cup trophies.
‘I think Raheem Sterling should go in at Chelsea and become the captain,’ former winger Sinclair told TalkSPORT .
‘If you look at it, he’s vice-captain of England and the only person who you can say has more experience than him is Thiago Silva and he’s getting on.
‘You can’t build your team around someone who might be leaving at the end of the season. ‘Everyone looks up to him. You hear young players all the time talking about how Raheem Sterling did this and how he helped them with that.
‘I think he could go in and be a great captain for Chelsea. He could lead that team to something very special.’
Former City striker Sergio Aguero recently revealed that he thinks his old club may have made a mistake in letting Sterling join Chelsea . Sinclair echoed those comments, adding:
‘You’re getting a winner, and somebody who never gives up. He’s 27 and his performances will only improve at his age.
‘He arrived at Manchester City as a 20-year-old boy and he left as a man, and I do think Chelsea are going to get the best out of him.’
Sterling said on Thursday he was ‘certain’ he wanted to join Chelsea after speaking to Tuchel and insists Stamford Bridge is the ‘perfect platform’ for him following his successful spell at City.
